چکیده

Chlorophylls are a fundamental class of tetrapyrroles and function as the central reaction center, accessory and photoprotective pigments in photosynthesis. Their unique individual photochemical properties are a consequence of the tetrapyrrole macrocycle, the structural chemistry and coordination behavior of the phytochlorin system, and specific substituent pattern. They achieve their full potential in solar energy conversion by working in concert in highly complex, supramolecular structures such as the reaction centers and light-harvesting complexes of photobiology. The biochemical function of these structures depends on the controlled interplay of structural and functional principles of the apoprotein and pigment cofactors. Chlorophylls and bacteriochlorophylls are optically active molecules with several chiral centers, which are necessary for their natural biological function and the assembly of their supramolecular complexes. However, in many cases the exact role of chromophore stereochemistry in the biological context is unknown. This review gives an overview of chlorophyll research in terms of basic function, biosynthesis and their functional and structural role in photosynthesis. It highlights aspects of chirality and symmetry of chlorophylls to elicit further interest in their role in nature. OPEN ACCESS Symmetry 2014, 6 782

Optimization and evolution of light harvesting in photosynthesis: the role of antenna chlorophyll conserved between photosystem II and photosystem I.

The efficiency of oxygenic photosynthesis depends on the presence of core antenna chlorophyll closely associated with the photochemical reaction centers of both photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI). Although the number and overall arrangement of these chlorophylls in PSII and PSI differ, structural comparison reveals a cluster of 26 conserved chlorophylls in nearly identical positions ...

Pigment composition and optical rotatory dispersion of chloroplast fractions obtained by detergent action.

Plant photosynthesis is considered to consist of photochemical reactions originating from 2 separate pigment systems. Fractionation of the 2 photochemical systems has been demonstrated only recently by detergent treatment of spinach chloroplasts followed by di fferential centri ftugation ( 1, 9). This study shows that the light and heavy fractions obtained by either digitonin or Triton X-100 tr...

Studies on the Chlorophylls and Photosynthesis of Thermal Algae from Yellowstone National Park, California, and Nevada

1. Myxophyceae normally growing at 65 degrees C. evolved oxygen upon irradiation and showed evidence of retaining the power to carry on the process of photosynthesis at 20 degrees C. This indicates that extra thermal energy is not essential for photosynthesis at least over a short period of time. 2. Chlorophyll a and b found in several species of Myxophyceae growing in waters ranging in tempera...

Minor complexes at work: light-harvesting by carotenoids in the photosystem II antenna complexes CP24 and CP26.

Plant photosynthesis relies on the capacity of chlorophylls and carotenoids to absorb light. One of the roles of carotenoids is to harvest green-blue light and transfer the excitation energy to the chlorophylls. The corresponding dynamics were investigated here for the first time, to our knowledge, in the CP26 and CP24 minor antenna complexes. The results for the two complexes differ substantia...

Representative Pathways of Excitation Migration in Photosystem I

Photosystem I is a protein-pigment complex that performs photosynthesis in plants, green algae, and cyanobacteria. It contains an aggregate of chlorophylls that absorbs light and delivers the resulting electronic excitation to the special pair of chlorophylls where the excitation energy is used for producing charge separation across the cell membrane. The seemingly random arrangement of chlorop...
